You’d be hard-pressed to find a better conditioned course anywhere. Designed by golf architect Billy Bell (best known for his creation at Torrey Pines), Hidden Valley Lake Golf Course is challenging and visually compelling.

The tour begins with an impossibly long par four that rises from the tee to an elevated green 434 yards away. From there, the front nine is mostly flat, with long, wide fairways that are broken in several places by a meandering stream.

The back nine is quite a different animal. At the eleventh tee, you begin a steep ascent that continues through the next four holes and to the fifteenth tee. From there to the fifteenth fairway, you give it all back in one of the most dramatic free-fall tee shots you’ll ever experience.

Par from the blue tees (6667 yards) is 72, with a rating of 72.5 and a slope of 124. For the ladies, par from the red tees (5546 yards) is also 72, with a rating of 68.3 and a slope of 116.

There is a driving range, putting green, chipping area, fully stocked pro shop, restaurant and lounge. Lessons are available from an excellent staff of professionals headed by a PGA professional.
